Overview

Methane Testing Matters

Methane conditions vary widely from site to site based on geology, historic land use, and subsurface conditions. Desktop reviews and assumptions are not enough for permitting or construction approval. Our on-site methane testing evaluates actual soil gas conditions below grade, in accordance with LADBS and local jurisdiction requirements. We install and monitor site-specific probes, document methane concentrations, and provide clear results used to classify the site’s methane hazard level.

The outcome is reliable data that supports building permits, mitigation design, and construction safety—without delays or surprises during plan review.

Frequently Asked Questions About On Methane Testing

Contact Us
When is methane testing required by LADBS?
LADBS requires methane testing when a project is located within a mapped Methane Hazard Zone or when site conditions indicate potential methane presence due to historic oil and gas activity, former landfills, or organic-rich soils. Testing is typically required for new construction, additions, ADUs, and projects involving below-grade structures.
What methane levels trigger mitigation requirements?
Methane concentrations measured during testing are evaluated against LADBS criteria to determine the appropriate Methane Mitigation Design Level. Higher methane concentrations typically require more robust mitigation measures, such as venting systems or methane barriers.
Can a soils report be conducted at the same time as methane testing?
Yes. In many cases, conducting a geotechnical (soils) investigation at the same time as methane testing is encouraged. Coordinating both investigations allows field crews to complete subsurface exploration during a single site visit, which can reduce overall mobilization costs and minimize site disturbance.
Who can perform methane testing for LADBS projects?
Methane testing must be conducted by a qualified and experienced professional familiar with LADBS requirements and reporting standards. GeoTed provides methane testing and documentation suitable for LADBS plan review and permitting.
Do you handle both residential and commercial projects?
Yes. We work with homeowners, contractors, developers, and municipalities on projects ranging from single-family homes to commercial sites.
